Beginners Guide To ADA Compliance

Line striping can help bring new life to your business’s parking lot, but if it isn’t done properly according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), you could have to pay up big time. Thankfully, Absolute Pavement Services is here to help. We can offer our NCDOT-certified pavement services and help you achieve ADA compliance.

What Does An ADA Compliant Parking Space Look Like?

An accessible parking space for cars must be a minimum of eight feet wide, and 11 feet wide minimum for vans. Your spaces should also include an access aisle which is about five feet in width itself. These aisles are critical as they provide space for individuals to deploy vehicle-mounted wheelchair lifts or unload mobility devices like wheelchairs, or walkers. An access aisle can be split between two spaces if needed. This might sound like it takes up a lot of space, but if you let Absolute Pavement Services handle your line striping, we’ll make sure your parking lot is ADA compliant and efficient.

How Many Accessible Spaces Does My Lot Need?

Your lot will need one accessible space for every 25 spaces it houses in total. There are some exceptions of course. Hospitals require 10% of patient and visitor spaces to be accessible, and rehabilitation facilities that specialize in treating conditions that affect mobility and outpatient physical therapy facilities require 20% of patient and visitor spaces to be accessible. No matter how big the parking lot or how many accessible spaces it requires, Absolute Pavement Services is here to get the job done right so you can breathe easy because your parking spaces are the last thing you need to be worried about.

What If My Lot Is Not ADA Compliant?

Federal law calls for fines up to $75,000 on just the first violation and jumps to $150,000 for additional violations. Perhaps worse than the fines, the damage to your business’s reputation could be catastrophic. Being ADA compliant is all about providing safe access to your place of business, and not doing so could reflect poor business ethics.
